Modern Britain in Global Society

Explore the role and position of the UK in the world today.

Discuss how British culture is exported, consumed and understood internationally, and ask what it means to be British in today’s globalised world.

What will you study?

  • The lasting impact of British culture and English language on the rest of the world.
  • How "Britishness" is understood, consumed and reproduced around the world.
  • How the development of British culture has been influenced by other cultures - facilitating greater intercultural awareness.

English for Study Abroad Students

Develop your intercultural competence and awareness, both in terms of the language and the culture of Britain.

This module draws upon your own experiences and unique perspectives as a visiting student from another country, culture, and language background. You will reflect on the aspects of British culture you encounter while studying abroad and compare and contrast these with knowledge of your home culture.

What will you study?

  • Academic writing: academic style, essay structure, linking ideas, analysing essay questions, referencing, using source material (quotations, paraphrases, summaries).
  • Discussions on topical issues selected by students (topics from TED Talks, issues in the news).
  • Discussions on language learning and living in another culture as a Study Abroad student (semester 1).

How will you study?

  • working in small groups to complete language tasks, eg analysing text
  • leading and participating in discussions
  • preparing for sessions through online materials, including screencasts to further understand the genre of academic writing
  • analysing how opinions are expressed in news articles and video clips.

Eligibility:

To get the most out of this module, your English level should be B2 or C1 according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
